SCDN Jargon Buster published.

'Clarity for a Change! Key Terms and Ideas in Community Development' is the final title for this publication.

It is available free to all SCDN members in two colour printed and spiral bound form.

It can also be downloaded free from the links on the Clarity page.

SCDN Jargon Buster

SCDN Publication - Clarity for a Change - Key Terms and Ideas in Community Development.

Following the consultation, on our 'CD Jargon Buster Plus' , we have made a number of amendments to the definitions and the comments on them. We have also reorganised the document into themed sections to make it more user friendly, and added a number of text boxes giving more information on key terms and ideas.  
 
We have received funding from Learning Connections, part of  Communities Scotland to finalise and publish final documen, under the new name of 'Clarity for a Change!: Key Terms and Ideas in Community Development'. A copy will be sent to all SCDN members in August 2007, as well as being circulated through a range of relevant networks, and made available for download from our website.
 
The earlier version of the document, which contains definitions of dozens of key terms, can be downloaded from the link below.

Key definitions

Community Development

'Community Development is about building active and sustainable communities based on social justice and mutual respect. It is about changing power structures to remove the barriers that prevent people from participating in the issues that affect their lives'

Community Work

"An occupation providing community groups and organisations with technical, educative, and organisational support."

Community Engagement 

“Developing and sustaining a working relationship between one or more public body and one or more community group, to help them both understand and act on the needs or issues that the community experiences.”

Community Learning and Development?

“Community learning and development (CLD) is learning and social development work with individuals and groups in their communities using a range of formal and informal methods. A common defining feature is that programmes and activities are developed in dialogue with communities and participants…(CLD’s) main aim is to help individuals and communities tackle real issues in their lives through community action and community-based learning”

Community Governance

'The involvement of local people and organisations in the way that government and public services are run in their area. It can range from standing for election to parish or district councils, to providing community managed services, or just having a say in local decisions.'
